It’s funny because all of Ben’s replies on that tweet are filled with people being like “aw it’s okay! thanks for trying!” By that logic, should we thank queer baiting show runners for trying? Why are we thanking a straight white guy for giving people hope and excitement for something queer that he had absolutely no guarantee he could provide?
Remember when I was asked if I would never kill a queer character and I said I couldn’t answer that because I don’t know what my future will lead to or what I might work on or who might be in charge? Because I would never want to give an audience the impression that just because I might want something and just because that representation might be important to me, that I can make a promise or that I can guarantee something. I saw many other writers take a similar stance. Because we have learned how important it is not to take a vulnerable audience and give them a false sense of security or a false sense of hope.
Ben had absolutely no guarantee at any point that he would be able to get that interview. Any single person could easily tweet out that they would like to get an interview or like to get a picture. I’m sure many of them would LOVE to get that interview. But they don’t promise things they can’t get. Ben is intentionally saying he’s trying to give you things that he knows you want. He’s saying that because it makes you all love him for “trying.” Everyone else is trying. Queer writer trying to get their queer characters’ stories told are trying. Journalists working for queer magazines and having to cover queer shows where bad things keep happening to queer women are trying. Low level writers and staff members on TV shows that perpetuate harmful tropes that they can’t do anything about are trying. Some straight white boy telling you he wants to get something so that you love and praise him isn’t trying. He’s preening. He’s leading you on. You are being intentionally baited. Please pay attention. Please, please don’t let someone who does not have your best interests at hear take advantage of the state your heart is in because of the things you love.
